It’s the ’70s thing and also because the fashion gods don’t like us to get too comfy in one style of pants, as then we won’t buy anything, right? So skinnies are starting to meet their match. You can still wear your skinnies, but if you want to be fashion-forward in a way that you will be very mainstream soon, buy some flare jeans. If you feel too old for big flares, just start to embrace the boot cut look again.
The Chunky Heel
Again, it’s the ’70s vibe that just keeps getting stronger and stronger, and the chunky heel is here to stay, at least for a while. Embrace a style that you can get a lot of use from over many seasons. Forgo the platform for a less disco and more mainstream ’70s look.
Longer blazers are in for fall, and vests are in for summer. So marry the two and purchase a longer vest to wear now and into the cooler months as well.
Brown Leather Belt
Just a good, plain, brown leather belt. You can wear it with your jeans, make a dress a bit more casual, wrap it over a blazer/cardigan if you work in an air-conditioned office or just tighten up a fuller blouse. But belts are in, and they are going to stay in.
Buy up your whites, as you’ll be wearing them come fall, as well! Tees, jeans, skirts, jackets … the whole “you really can wear white after Labor Day” thing is finally getting traction.
The Glamorous Bohemian
This season, the boho vibe draws from the ’70s woman and the modern traveler. The shapes and fabrics are luxe — floaty hemlines, allover print, and embellishments galore.
It makes sense since the fashion crowd has been avoiding their sleeves for seasons now that designers are bypassing them all together with Fall’s caped silhouettes. Some are polished, while others, more statement-making. But regardless of pattern or color, the cut itself was made to catch the eye.
On the Fringe
Where we’ve seen fringed details creeping onto bags and shoes since last season, designers are using it much more heavy-handedly come Fall. Look for it giving skirts a sexy, skin-baring effect, upping the ante on evening wear or adding textural intrigue to our favorite knits.
This season’s color takeover was decidedly gray — and we’re not sad about it. The color looks particularly cool in monochromatic schemes — an easy one to pull off head to toe. And while it goes with everything already in your closet, it also helps dial down the sexy vibes of a strapless dress or a fitted sheath, while making sweaters and coats somehow feel even cozier. Now that’s versatility.
Plaid gets a revamp for Fall, making its return on cool-girl coats, trousers, and polished separates. It’s classic with a twist — and in some cases, far more prep-school rebel than schoolgirl uniform.
