On Trend – Leggings

Did you know that leggings go back hundreds of years?

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Leggings are a type of skin-tight garment that covers the legs and may be worn by both men and women. Originally, leggings were two separate garments, one for each leg.

Modern leggings are typically made from a blend of lycra (aka spandex), nylon, cotton, or polyester blend, but can also be made from wool, silk, and other materials. Leggings are available in a multitude of colors and decorative designs. Leggings are sometimes worn fully exposed, but are more traditionally worn partially covered by a garment such as a skirt, a large t-shirt, shorts, or fully covered by an outer garment, such as a full length skirt.

Leggings are typically ankle-length, and some are stirrupped. Some are shorter. Leggings are worn to keep a person’s legs warm, as protection from chafing during an activity such as exercise, or as a decorative or fashion garment. Leggings are worn by both men and women during exercise but usually only by women at other times. In contemporary usage, leggings refers to tight, form-fitting trousers that extend from the waist to the ankles.

History

Leggings of the Native Americans (Karl May Museum, Radebeul).

Leggings in various forms and under various names have been worn for warmth and protection by both men and women throughout the centuries. The separate hose worn by men in Europe from the 13th to 16th centuries (the Renaissance period) were a form of leggings, as are the trews of the Scottish Highlands. Separate leggings of buckskin leather were worn by some Native Americans. These were adopted by some Long Hunters, French fur trappers, and later by mountain men. They are the leatherstockings of James Fenimore Cooper‘s Leatherstocking Tales. The Buckskins were mostly a dull grey brain-tan, not the bright, glossy vegetable tanned leather commonly used today.

Cowboys wore leggings of buckskin to protect from chapping caused by riding, wear and tear to their pants, and bites from animals, such as snakes or insects in the scruff, such as ticks.

In many places, especially in colder countries such as Russia or Korea, men and women continued to wear wool leggings into modern times, often as an additional outer layer for warmth.

The linen pantalettes worn by girls and women under crinolines in the mid-19th century were also a form of leggings, and were originally two separate garments. Leggings became a part of fashion in the 1960s, as trousers similar to the capris pants but much tighter.  Read more

How to wear

From street style stars to A-listers, everyone seems to have jumped aboard the culottes train, making them an “It” silhouette for all seasons. Still, something about voluminous short pants—also known as gauchos—doesn’t exactly scream wearable and flattering to a lot of women.

Stilettos Heels

The allure of the Stiletto Heel

What woman doesn’t feel more feminine when walking in stilettos?  They make you walk with a purpose – you have to step carefully lest you land in a sidewalk crack or grating in the pavement – and they make a killer sound.  Face it, clogs and platforms can’t quite compare with the sound of stilettos clicking across the floor.

Stiletto heel

(From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia)

A shoe with a stiletto heel

A stiletto heel is a long, thin, high heel found on some boots and shoes, usually for women.

It is named after the stiletto dagger, the phrase being first recorded in the early 1930s.[1] Stiletto heels may vary in length from 2.5 centimetres (1 inch) to 25 cm (10 inches) or more if a platform sole is used, and are sometimes defined as having a diameter at the ground of less than 1 cm (slightly less than half an inch). Stiletto-style heels 5 cm (2.0 in) or shorter are called kitten heels.

Not all high slim heels merit the description stiletto. The extremely slender original Italian-style stiletto heels of the late 1950s and very early 1960s were no more than 5 mm (0.20 in) in diameter for much of their length, although the heel sometimes flared out a little at the top-piece (tip). After their demise in the mid-late 1960s, such slender heels were difficult to find until recently due to changes in the way heels were mass-produced. A real stiletto heel has a stem of solid steel or alloy. The more usual method of mass-producing high shoe heels, i.e. moulded plastic with an internal metal tube for reinforcement, does not achieve the true stiletto shape.  Read more…

Blind Date – Winter Style

What should you wear on a Blind Date?

Nothing quite like the anxiety of staring at your closet, helpless, trying to decide what to wear on a first date with someone you’ve never met.  Except maybe when you try on one outfit after another until half your closet is strewn across your bedroom.  Maybe we can work through this with a little help from the experts.

From Match.com:

How to Prepare For a Blind Date

by Tamsen Butler, Demand Media

Getting ready for a blind date can be a little more difficult than preparing for a date with someone you already know. You may wonder what style your date likes or how he’ll be dressed. Approach this situation as an exciting opportunity to meet someone new, and you’re bound to have more fun than if you look at it as a daunting task.

Step 1

Get as much information as you can beforehand regarding your date. If a mutual friend arranged the blind date, consult your friend to find out what you need to know about your blind date. You can find out a lot of great information that can help your blind date run more smoothly. For example, if your friend tells you that your blind date is an animal activist, you can then avoid some awkwardness by not wearing leather pants.

Step 2

Consider your destination. If you already have the entire date planned out, then dress accordingly for the things you’re supposed to do. Don’t wear jeans if you’re going out for an elegant dinner; by the same token, don’t dress formally if you’re meeting up for some bowling. If you aren’t sure what the blind date will entail, dress nicely in a way that will allow you to engage in a variety of activities.

Step 3

Consider comfort. You may think that you look best in stiletto heels or a three-piece suit, but whatever you wear should be comfortable enough that you can spend the date getting to know the other person, instead of thinking about how uncomfortable you feel. While you do want to look attractive for your date, you don’t want to do it at the expense of your comfort.  Read the full article here

From eHarmony (eH Advice):

5 Things Not to Wear on a First Date

by eHarmony Staff

Don’t let your first date attire ruin your chances for a second date. What you wear is the perfect opportunity to present who you are before you say a word. To win your date over with captivating style, consider the location, time of day and weather as these factors will weigh heavily on your attire choice and stay away from our top five things you shouldn’t wear on a first date.

1) Don’t Try a new Trend

Reveal the real you, and stick to clothing you actually wear. “Don’t get in a costume-like outfit,” says Keylee Sanders, owner of the successful consulting and styling company Style Studio and a former Miss Teen USA. “Dress in something you would wear on a regular basis because hopefully you’ll see this person a second date. Stick to your true style self or fashion self on that first date.”

2) Don’t Reveal too Much

First impressions are quick to be made, hard to get rid of and set the tone for the entire date. Ask yourself what your outfit says about you. There’s a difference between wanting to look flirty and sexy and leaving nothing to the imagination. “That doesn’t mean you need to dress dowdy or frumpy, for example if you’re going to wear a short skirt, don’t wear a low cut top,” says the former beauty queen. A good rule of thumb is to choose one area of your body you want to reveal—whether that’s an above the knee skirt to show off your legs, a subtle scooped neck blouse to enhance your décolleté or an off the shoulders sweater to feature a graceful neckline.   Read the full article here

The designers at Polyvore were given a preview and asked to create fashion sets for a contest that Rebecca herself will judge – here is mine:

Rebecca Minkoff See Buy Wear collection

So what do the experts at Vogue say about this collection:

One gets the feeling that Rebecca Minkoff’s customer might be most familiar with the designer’s seasonal muses from, say, a Pinterest board. Still, if Minkoff can turn on her young clientele to the likes of Patti Smith or Françoise Hardy, as some of the icons she’s envisioned through her kicky clothes, more power to her.  Read more…

Cropped Flares

Can you pull off the trending cropped flares?

I have to admit that I don’t quite have the figure for this look – being on the curvy side and of limited stature, this look just doesn’t do me justice. That is not to say that they don’t flatter some figure types.  Make sure to “own” this look – make it a deliberate statement and pair them with just the right heel.
